  1. •    Scan the plot at the highest magnification possible
  2.     on your screen; i.e. make the image fit the whole
  3.     screen if possible. The screen resolution is
  4.     the limiting factor stealing the data.
  5. •    Save the image as a MacPaint or as a PICT
  6.     format file.
  7. •    Open DataThief. You will be prompted to open a
  8.     file. Select the image you would like to steal
  9.     data points from.
  10. •    The plot will appear on the screen. Now move
  11.     the mouse pointer to the leftmost point of the 
  12.     horizontal axis in your plot and click the mouse.
  13.     A dialog box will show, in which you can fill in
  14.     the real X coordinate of this axis point.
  15. •    Then move the mouse pointer to the rightmost
  16.     position of the horizontal axis and click the mouse
  17.     once. You will get another dialog box; fill in the
  18.     appropriate value. Do the same for the lowest and
  19.     highest points on the vertical axis.
  20. •    You will now be prompted for an optional correction
  21.     in the axes coordinates and additional options;
  22.     e.g. error bars, logaritmic axes & markers to make
  23.     your datapoint-clicking visible.
  24. •    Don't be afraid if the plot appears skewed on the
  25.     screen. DataThief will correct for skewness in the
  26.     output file.
  27. •    This is the time to investigate the options in the 
  28.     menu bar. You can click each datapoint separately
  29.     or perform an automatic scan. In the latter case
  30.     you can set several variables to make the scan fit
  31.     your wishes. Try it out and find your preferences.
  32. •    Now move the mouse pointer to the first data point
  33.     you want to steal and click the mouse once. Repeat
  34.     this for all data points or watch the scan going on.
  35. •    In single data mode, if you have selected error
  36.     bars, click on either the upper or the lower
  37.     extremity of the error bar, then click on the
  38.     remaining extremity.
  39.     DataThief is smart enough to realize which end
  40.     of the error bar has the highest value, and will
  41.     save that value accordingly.
  42. •    When you have clicked all data points, select
  43.     Save or Close from the File menu.
  44.     This will save your data points in a TEXT file
  45.     which can be read by any word processor,
  46.     spreadsheet or plotting program. If you like,
  47.     you can set the 'creator'. This enables your
  48.     favorite program for further processing to
  49.     open the data file automagically.
